Porriño, 17 September 2015. Biofabri, the University of Zaragoza andSATVI today announced that for the tuberculosis vaccine candidate MTBVAC the Phase 1B clinical trial in South Africa has successfully started. Biofabri will be the sponsor of this 1B Phase clinical trial. The trial is partly supported by TBVI.
“This clinical trial is a very important step in the development of the vaccine and it will be sponsored by BIOFABRI” said Esteban Rodríguez, CEO of Biofabri. “MTBVAC will be the first vaccine to be fully developed in Spain”.
The trial is being led by Dr Michele Tameris, the Principal Investigator from SATVI. This study would commence middle of September 2015 and will be conducted over a two year period where after the research findings will be published. This clinical trial is designed to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of MTBVAC vaccine in new-borns. Previously, in 2013 the vaccine was included in a phase IA trial in adults in Switzerland.
The Medicines Control Council (MCC) and Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries have granted permission to initiate a Phase 1B clinical trial for the Spanish vaccine candidate designed by Biofabri with the strain MTBVAC from the University of Zaragoza. This vaccine will be the first live-attenuated Mycobacterium tuberculosis-based vaccine to start clinical evaluation in new-borns.
The new vaccine is expected to offer a higher level of protection than the BCG vaccine.

About MTBVAC
MTBVAC is made from a strain isolated from humans and was designed by Professor Carlos Martín, Director of the Mycobacterial Genetics Research Group of the University of Zaragoza. The research group is part of the Spanish Network of Centres for Biomedical Research of Respiratory Diseases (CIBERES), headed by Dr. Carlos Martín Montañés, and has worked in close collaboration with Dr. Brigitte Gicquel, from the Pasteur Institute in Paris. The BCG vaccine protects against various forms of tuberculosis in children, but its efficacy rate for pulmonary tuberculosis in adults varies widely, ranging from 0 to 80 percent.
MTBVAC stimulates the immune system to enable it to recognise the infectious agent and offer long-term protection against the most common form of tuberculosis: pulmonary tuberculosis.

La vacuna española contra la tuberculosis, MTBVAC, inicia la Fase IB de ensayos clínicos
. El ensayo clínico será dirigido por la Iniciativa Africana de Vacuna contra la Tuberculosis (SATVI).
- BIOFABRI, biofarmacéutica española dedicada a desarrollo y fabricación de vacunas de uso humano, será quien patrocine dicha Fase IB.
Porriño, 16 Septiembre 2015. Biofabri, la Universidad de Zaragoza y SATVI han anunciado hoy que la vacuna candidata contra la tuberculosis, MTBVAC, ha iniciado con éxito la Fase IB de ensayos clínicos en Sudáfrica. Biofabri también ha anunciado que será el patrocinador del ensayo clínico de Fase IB. Este ensayo clínico también será en parte subvencionado por la Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative (TBVI).
“El inicio de la Fase IB es un avance muy importante para el desarrollo de la vacuna y Biofabri será su patrocinador” dice Esteban Rodríguez, CEO de Biofabri. “De concluirse con éxito, MTBVAC será la primera vacuna que se desarrolle por completo en España”.
La Fase IB de ensayos clínicos está siendo dirigido por Dr. Michele Tameris, investigador principal del SATVI. Comenzará a mediados de septiembre 2015 y durará un periodo de dos años, hasta la posterior publicación de los resultados. Este ensayo pretende evaluar la seguridad e inmunogenicidad de la vacuna MTBVAC en recién nacidos.
Previamente, en 2013, la vacuna finalizó la fase 1 A de ensayo clínico en 36 adultos de entre 18 y 45 años y se llevó a cabo en Suiza.
Las autoridades sanitarias sudafricanas (Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries y Medicines Control Council) han autorizado el inicio del ensayo clínico de Fase IB para la vacuna española diseñada por Biofabri SL con la cepa MTBVAC de la Universidad de Zaragoza. Esta vacuna será la primera vacuna viva atenuada de Mycobacterium tuberculosis en iniciar el ensayo en recién nacidos.
La nueva vacuna espera ofrecer un nivel de protección mayor que la actual BCG.

MTBVAC es una vacuna formulada a partir de una cepa procedente de un aislamiento humano que ha sido diseñada por el grupo de Genética de Micobacterias de la Universidad de Zaragoza que pertenece al CIBER de Enfermedades Respiratorias (CIBERES) y que lidera el Dr. Carlos Martín Montañés en colaboración con la doctora Brigitte Gicquel, del Instituto Pasteur de Paris.
La actual vacuna BCG protege contra diferentes formas de tuberculosis en niños, su protección en tuberculosis pulmonar de adultos es muy variable, de 0-80%. MTBVAC es una vacuna que busca activar el sistema inmunitario para que sea capaz de reconocer al agente infeccioso y proteja a largo plazo frente a la forma más común de la enfermedad: la respiratoria.
