Transvac

Transvac: European network of vaccine development

TRANSVAC is a collaborative infrastructure project funded under the European Commission’s 7th Framework Programme offering a complimentary set of coordinated vaccine research and development facilities. The project has emerged as the joint effort of leading European groups in the field of vaccine development, and is coordinated by the European Vaccine Initiative (EVI). TRANSVAC’s vaccine development facilities are not linked to any particular type of disease. The project is funded with 10M € and runs for a total of four years, with completion scheduled for September 2013.

TRANSVAC will result in improved cooperation between research institutions in Europe in order to maintain and further develop expertise and competencies as well as to ensure the future of the manufacture, research, and development of efficacious, affordable, timely, and safe vaccines in Europe.

The consortium is providing a vaccine development platform that may be accessed by external European groups, offering services that will accelerate the development of their experimental vaccines.  Through a peer-reviewed competitive process, external groups may apply to benefit from the expertise, reagents, and facilities of the TRANSVAC services free of charge.  TRANSVAC services include access to: Adjuvants, animal models, standardised reagents and assays, as well as microarray analysis.

TRANSVAC also includes significant research and networking components which work in unity with the services. These components aim to improve the existing knowledge regarding adjuvants, standardised reagents and assays, microarrays, animal models, and protein characterisation and production. In addition, TRANSVAC will include a modular training course focusing on vaccine development education.

The TRANSVAC network was established by 13 partners (including TBVI), but any European group with relevant experience, facilities, and resources for mutual benefit is invited to join the network.  The long-term vision of TRANSVAC is to establish a European Research Infrastructure, providing a spectrum of coordinated vaccine development facilities, managed by each of the participating institutions.
