TBVAC
TBVI is coordinator of TBVAC (2004-2009), a European project to develop improved vaccines against tuberculosis. TBVAC is a consortium of more than 30 renowned universities, research institutes and private companies, bundling their research and know-how to speed up the development of reliable vaccines (see list of partners).
The major objective of TBVAC is to identify, develop and evaluate new and improved vaccines in preclinical and clinical Phase I trials (testing safety).
TBVAC focuses on 3 components:
- Vaccine discovery: To identify and develop novel vaccines or antigen components;
- Strategic research: To optimize the delivery and composition of a selected number of promising candidate vaccines. And to evaluate their safety, immunogenicity, and protective efficacy;
- Downstream development: To carry out Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) production, regulatory aspects of vaccine development and Phase I clinical trials, including trials in TB-endemic areas.
TBVAC further aims to continue strengthening the collaborative research capacity within Europe in the field of tuberculosis. The project follows our working model of supervision, evaluation and support.
The integrated research project is initiated and funded by the European Union. TBVAC brought successful results (see also publication list), which will be further developed in its succeeding project NEWTBVAC (2010-2014).
