Pre- and early clinical development of TB vaccines

April 2012 - April 2015
3 million US dollar, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Accelerating TB vaccine development
A budget of 2,997,993 US dollars, provided by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, allows TBVI to accelerate the advancement of globally available vaccine candidates through preclinical and early clinical development stages. The project started April 30, 2012 and activities can find place until April 30, 2015.

The following studies will be done:
1) Head-to-head evaluation measuring the safety and efficacy of boosting candidates in a centralised, well established and robust Guinea Pig model; the outcome of which will accelerate development of boosting candidates past Gate 2*.

2) Head-to-head evaluation measuring the safety and efficacy of boosting candidates in a well-established non-human primate model; the outcome of which will accelerate development of boosting candidates past Gate 3.*

3) Manufacturing and evaluation in phase I clinical studies of one selected vaccine candidate that has passed Gate 2*, after selection of a project by an open call for proposals; the outcome of which will accelerate development of this boosting candidate past Gate 3.*
In addition the fund provides for advocacy and resource mobilisation activities to be carried out, with the aim to raise funds required to support other complementary activities to develop the global vaccine portfolio.

Open call for propsals
The proposals that have been submitted end 2012 in response to our open call for proposals for early clinical development of new promising TB vaccine candidates, have been reviewed. The vaccine candidates MTBVAC, developed by the University of Zaragoza and produced by BIOFABRI, and HBHA, developed by Institute Pasteur Lille and produced in collaboration with AERAS, have been awarded with financial support for further development. Here you can read more about it.

Call for application
In January 2013 a call for application for TB vaccine evaluation was opened.
This call focuses on testing the protective efficacy of new vaccine candidates, formulations or delivery systems in a guinea pig experiment. Read more.
