Letter in Financial Times

13-06-12

Today a letter to the editor 'Vaccines crucial in battle against TB'was published in the Financial Times. This letter was written by TBVI's chair of the Governance Board, Dr Onno Ruding, and member of our Council of Trustees, Mr John Bowis

The authors refer to an article about the growing threat of drug resistant bacteria, among others tuberculosis. The article says that new antibiotics should be developed to tackle this threat. Dr Ruding and Mr Bowis agree with this statement, but however also advocate for the development of new vaccines.

"In the case of tuberculosis, new, more effective vaccines would have tremendous impact. The rate of TB cases will decline steeply, meaning we will rely a lot less on medication. Using vaccines to prevent people from becoming ill saves patients from having to take a heavy cocktail of drugs with nasty side-effects for months in a row, and has considerable financial and economic benefit. Besides providing protection from TB, vaccines could very well have therapeutic advantages, too."
