Prof. Juhani Eskola, Chairman


Prof. Juhani Eskola is currently Deputy Director General of the Finnish National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL). He is responsible for all activities related to prevention and control of infectious diseases, to vaccines, vaccinations and environmental health, as well as leading research, development and innovation activities in THL.

In addition to his job in Finland, prof. Eskola serves in several international organizations as a consultant, evaluator or scientific adviser (e.g. WHO/SAGE, IVI and EVI). He has served as clinical development consultant for the TBVAC programme during years 2004-2008, and since 2009 has been the chair of the Clinical Development Team of TBVI.

Before being appointed to his current position in the newly formed THL, prof. Eskola worked at KTL (Finnish National Public Health Institute) as Deputy Director General in years 2004-2008, and as Research Professor and Department Head, first in the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology and later in the Department of Vaccines, in 1991-1999. During the years 2000-2003 he worked as as Senior Vice President at Aventis Pasteur (currently Sanofi Pasteur) in Lyon, France, being responsible for global medical affairs and clinical development of all vaccines in the company.

Juhani Eskola, MD, PhD, graduated at the University of Helsinki in 1975, and got his PhD degree in 1983. He is a specialist in paediatric infectious diseases (1988). From 1989 on he is a docent in the University of Helsinki. Juhani Eskola has worked as general practitioner, paediatrician and infectious disease clinician before moving his career to public health in 1991.
