Mr. John Bowis


Mr. John Bowis is a former member of the European parliament for London (1999-2009) and former spokesman on Environment, Health and Food Safety. He served on the Parliament’s Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee as well as the Development Committee. He was vice president of the African-Caribbean-Pacific/EU (ACP/EU) Joint Parliamentary Assembly.

From 1997-1999 Bowis was International Policy Adviser to the World Health Organization's Collaborating Centre at the Institute of Psychiatry in London, supporting the UN's Nations for Mental Health Campaign. He was also involved in launching and promoting WHO's campaign on epilepsy, ‘Out of the Shadows’.

Previous to that Bowis was a member of the UK Parliament for Battersea (1987-1997), where he served as Parliamentary Private Secretary (1989-1993) to David Hunt at the Department of the Environment and the Welsh Office, as Health & Social Services Minister at the Department of Health (1993-96), representing the UK at meetings of the Council or Health Ministers, and as Minister for Transport in London and for Road Safety (1996-1997).

Mr. Bowis is adviser to several health organizations and companies. He is Hon. Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists since 2003, Hon. Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians since 2009 and got honored with OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in 1981.
