- TB and HIV
- TB is of special threat to people with HIV, because of their weakened immune system. They are 20 to 30 times more likely to suffer from TB once they are infected with the bacteria than people without HIV.
- The HIV/AIDS epidemic has fuelled a dramatic resurgence of TB. Of the 8.8 million new cases of TB in 2010, an estimated 1.1 million people were HIV-positive.
- The 1.4 million TB-deaths in 2010 included 350 000 people with HIV, making TB a leading killer of HIV-infected people.
- HIV and TB form a lethal combination, each speeding the other's progress.
- There are serious safety concerns regarding the use of the only currently available vaccine, BCG, in HIV infected newborns.
